Watch a rep work a cold list with their thumb on a desk phone and you'll notice something depressing: most of their time isn't spent talking. It's spent reading a digit off the screen, punching it in, waiting for the ring, hearing "the number you have dialed is not in service," hanging up, and logging the result. The actual conversation is the small part.

But the math below isn't marketing math — it's stopwatch math, and you can run it against your own list. The point isn't "buy our thing." The point is that the gap between a rep dialing by hand and a rep on a dialer is bigger than most managers assume, and it flips the cost equation fast.
The three ways a rep gets through a list
There are really three dialing modes, and they're separated by how much dead time the software eats for the rep:
- Manual dial — rep reads the number, types it, waits. Everything is human-speed.
- Click-to-dial — rep clicks a number in the CRM; the system dials. Saves the typing, but the rep still sits through every ring, every voicemail, every dead tone.
- Single-line power dialer — the system dials the next record automatically the moment the previous call ends, screens some dead numbers, and lets the rep drop a pre-recorded voicemail with one click instead of talking through it.

What actually happens on a 200-contact list
Here's the uncomfortable truth about any outbound list: most records don't turn into conversations. Rough, industry-typical breakdown for a decently sourced B2C or warm-ish B2B list:

Every one of those outcomes costs time. The question is how much, and that's where the three modes split.
Time per outcome, by mode
Rough per-record time budgets (seconds), including dialing, waiting, and logging:

Live connects take the same time in every mode — a conversation is a conversation. The savings live entirely in the non-conversation records, which is 85% of the list.
Running the 200-record list end to end
Manual dial:
- Dead: 30 × 25s = 750s
- No answer: 90 × 45s = 4,050s
- Voicemail: 50 × 55s = 2,750s
- Connects: 30 × 210s = 6,300s
- Total: 13,850s ≈ 3.85 hours → about 52 records/hour, but only ~8 live connects/hour because connects are the slow part and they're rare.
Click-to-dial:
- Dead: 30 × 15s = 450s
- No answer: 90 × 35s = 3,150s
- Voicemail: 50 × 45s = 2,250s
- Connects: 30 × 210s = 6,300s
- Total: 12,150s ≈ 3.38 hours → ~59 records/hour, ~9 connects/hour.
Power dialer (single line):
- Dead: 30 × 3s = 90s
- No answer: 90 × 30s = 2,700s
- Voicemail: 50 × 12s = 600s
- Connects: 30 × 210s = 6,300s
- Total: 9,690s ≈ 2.69 hours → ~74 records/hour, ~11 connects/hour.
Notice the connect-per-hour numbers: 8 → 9 → 11. That's real but modest, because the connects themselves are the same length regardless of tooling. The bigger story is list penetration — the power dialer clears the whole 200 in 2.7 hours versus 3.85, so a rep gets through ~1.4 lists in the time manual dialing gets through one.
Push the list to a fresh 200 in that reclaimed 1.15 hours and the rep touches roughly 86 extra records and lands ~13 extra connects before lunch that manual dialing never reached. That's where the "8 an hour vs 25 before lunch" framing comes from — it's cumulative connects across the morning, not a per-hour miracle.
Where the dialer cost breaks even
Now the money. The ReadySMS Power Dialer:

Take a rep on Team. A morning of power dialing burns roughly 2.7 hours of talk/ring/voicemail time. Minutes actually connected to a carrier — not just app time — run maybe 90 minutes across that block once you strip out the auto-skipped dead numbers and instant voicemail drops. At $0.0375/min that's about $3.38 in dialing minutes for the morning.
The seat is $69/mo ÷ ~21 working days ≈ $3.29/day.
So the marginal daily cost of putting a rep on the dialer versus a bare phone is roughly $3.29 seat + a few dollars of minutes ≈ $6–7/day.
Now the value side. A fully loaded inside-sales rep — salary, tax, benefits, overhead — commonly runs $25–$45/hour. Call it $35. The dialer reclaims ~1.15 hours per 200-record cycle. Even at one cycle a day, that's $40 of recovered selling time against $6–7 of cost. The break-even isn't close. You clear the seat cost before the rep finishes their first coffee.
And that's ignoring the 13 extra connects. If your list converts connects to opportunities at even a low rate, those connects are the whole game.
The honest caveats
A few places this math bends, and I'd rather say them than have you find out the hard way:
- If your list is nearly all live pickups, the dialer advantage shrinks — the savings live in dead/voicemail/no-answer records, and a hot inbound list has few of those. A power dialer is for cold-to-warm penetration, not for a queue of people already expecting your call.
- Single-line vs multi-line matters. These numbers are single-line (dial one, wait). Multi-line predictive dialing goes faster but risks abandoned calls and compliance headaches — we deliberately run single-line for that reason.
- Voicemail drop is legal; ringless voicemail is a different, riskier beast. If you're leaning on drops, know where that line sits before you scale it.
- Connect rate is not the scoreboard. More dials mean nothing if the conversations don't advance. Transfer rate, not connect rate, is what actually pays for the seats.
Pair the dial with a text and the numbers move again
The single biggest lever here isn't the dialer speed — it's what happens on the no-answers and voicemails, which are 70% of the list. A dial that hits voicemail and drops a message, then fires an auto-text 90 seconds later, roughly doubles callback rates versus voicemail alone. A single-line power dialer doesn't make conversations faster — it makes the dead time between them nearly disappear, which is why the same rep clears a list in 2.7 hours instead of 3.85 and stacks ~13 extra connects across a morning.
Against a $35/hour loaded rep cost, the seat pays for itself in the first cycle of the day. That's the whole argument.
